Exceptional Medical Success at Menoufia University: National Liver Institute Team Saves the Life of the Youngest Patient with Biliary Obstruction

Dr. Ahmed Farag El-Kassed, President of Menoufia University, announced the success of a medical team at the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Center of the National Liver Institute in saving the life of a 10-month-old infant who was suffering from biliary obstruction caused by gallstones. This case is considered extremely rare and may be among the youngest cases ever treated globally in this highly specialized field.

The University President explained that the intervention was performed using the latest biliary endoscopy techniques. The case was handled with extreme precision due to the patient’s very young age and the complexity of her condition. Her family had previously sought care at several hospitals and medical centers without success before turning to the National Liver Institute, as her condition had become life-threatening. This achievement reflects the advanced level reached by the center, particularly in pediatric endoscopy.

El-Kassed added that this accomplishment is an extension of the institute’s ongoing successes, as it has become one of the leading centers in Egypt and the region. The center has performed nearly 1,000 pediatric biliary endoscopy procedures, further strengthening its regional and international standing.

He emphasized that this success highlights the distinguished status of the institute and reflects the university’s commitment to supporting and advancing the medical sector in line with the latest international standards. He noted that the efficiency of the medical staff and their ability to handle complex cases contribute to achieving exceptional milestones, enhancing the university’s role in serving the community and improving its global ranking.

The University President praised the medical team, stating that this achievement is the result of outstanding collaboration between the departments of hepatology, pediatrics, and anesthesia, along with the significant efforts of the nursing staff and personnel at the Endoscopy Center, supported by advanced equipment and effective management.

In a related context, the Endoscopy Center at the National Liver Institute is hosting a specialized workshop this week, with the participation of leading hepatology and gastroenterology specialists from across the country. The workshop includes the presentation of complex cases and is conducted at a scientific level comparable to major international events.

For his part, Prof. Dr. Osama Hegazy, Dean of the National Liver Institute, expressed his pride in this medical achievement, affirming the institute’s continued commitment to providing advanced medical services, alongside its leading role in training and scientific research. He added that organizing workshops and hosting medical experts contribute to knowledge exchange and improving performance efficiency, ensuring the best possible healthcare—especially for complex and rare cases.
