Pharmacognosy is one of the oldest branches of pharmacy profession concerned with the study of the physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of natural drugs, including the search for new drugs from natural sources.

It has undergone significant development in recent years and has emerged today as highly interdisciplinary and one major area of pharmaceutical sciences as the search for new drugs from natural sources and nutraceuticals.

Pharmacognosy department teaches courses: medicinal plants, drugs, natural product chemistry, quality control of herbal medicines, as well as supervising the teaching of some other courses. The department's activities extend to contributing to the teaching and research workload in some pharmacy colleges in other universities

The department aims to introduce the student to Pharmacognosy and the importance of teaching the decisions of this science in obtaining a nutritional and medicinal source of natural products (plant, animal or mineral).
