The Liver Institute Opens New Doors to Explore Risk Factors for Pancreatic Fistula After Pancreaticoduodenectomy

Prof. Dr. Osama Hegazy, Dean of the National Liver Institute, attended the discussion of a PhD thesis titled "Risk Factors for Pancreatic Fistula After Pancreaticoduodenectomy (Experience of the National Liver Institute)" in the field of liver, pancreas, and biliary surgery. The thesis was presented by Dr. Ihab Abdel Aziz El-Sayed Salem, Associate Professor of General Surgery at Benha University.

The research was conducted under the supervision of:

Prof. Dr. Hisham Mohamed Abdel Dayem, Professor of Liver, Pancreas, and Biliary Surgery and former Dean of the National Liver Institute.

Prof. Dr. Essam Mohamed Salah El-Din, Professor of Liver, Pancreas, and Biliary Surgery at the Institute.

Prof. Dr. Mohamed Taha Badawi, Professor of Liver, Pancreas, and Biliary Surgery at the Institute.

Associate Prof. Dr. Ahmed Nabil Salam, Associate Professor of Liver, Pancreas, and Biliary Surgery at the Institute.

The thesis was discussed in the presence of an evaluation committee consisting of:

Prof. Dr. Hisham Mohamed Abdel Dayem

Prof. Dr. Taha Eid Yass, Professor of Liver, Pancreas, and Biliary Surgery at the Institute.

Prof. Dr. Ayman Salah, Professor of General Surgery at Kasr Al-Aini, Cairo University.

This study addresses one of the most critical complications following pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure), as pancreatic fistula is a serious postoperative complication that significantly increases mortality rates.

The findings indicate that using a single-layer pancreaticojejunostomy technique may have a positive impact in reducing the incidence of pancreatic fistula. Additionally, the results showed that patients with bile duct and duodenal tumors had a higher rate of pancreatic fistula compared to those with pancreatic head tumors.

The study emphasized the importance of early prediction and management of pancreatic fistula through a multidisciplinary team consisting of interventional radiologists, endoscopy specialists, and liver and pancreas surgeons.

The thesis recommended that pancreaticojejunostomy should be performed by the most experienced pancreatic surgeons in cases where the risk factor for pancreatic fistula exceeds 7.

Among the attendees were:

Prof. Dr. Amr Mostafa, Professor and Head of the Liver, Pancreas, and Biliary Surgery Department at the Institute.

Associate Prof. Dr. Ahmed Atiya, Associate Professor of Hepatology and Gastroenterology and Executive Director of the National Liver Institute Hospital.

Associate Prof. Dr. Islam Ayoub, Associate Professor of Liver, Pancreas, and Biliary Surgery and General Director of the National Liver Institute Hospital.

Wishing continued success and excellence to all involved!
