The National Liver Institute Breaks New Ground in Liver, Pancreas, and Biliary Surgery, Highlighting the Impact of Pancreatic Stump Closure Techniques on Pancreatic Fistula After Distal Pancreatectomy

Dr. Mostafa Mohamed Mostafa Abu Qoura conducted a PhD research in liver, pancreas, and biliary surgery titled:
"The Impact of Pancreatic Stump Closure Techniques on Pancreatic Fistula After Distal Pancreatectomy."

The research was supervised by:

Prof. Dr. Hisham Mohamed Abdel Dayem, Professor of Liver, Pancreas, and Biliary Surgery, and former Dean of the National Liver Institute.

Prof. Dr. Hossam El-Din Mohamed Suleiman, Professor of Liver, Pancreas, and Biliary Surgery at the Institute.

Prof. Dr. Taha Eid Yass, Professor of Liver, Pancreas, and Biliary Surgery at the Institute.

Associate Prof. Dr. Islam Ismail Ayoub, Associate Professor of Liver, Pancreas, and Biliary Surgery, and General Director of the National Liver Institute Hospital.

The thesis was discussed in the presence of the evaluation committee, which included:

Prof. Dr. Hisham Mohamed Abdel Dayem

Prof. Dr. Hani Abdel Magid Shreim, Professor of Liver, Pancreas, and Biliary Surgery, Vice Dean for Environmental Affairs and Community Service, and former Dean of the National Liver Institute.

Prof. Dr. Ahmed Fahmy Omar, Professor of General Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University.

Study Overview and Key Findings

This study evaluated the safety of different pancreatic stump closure techniques in preventing pancreatic fistula after distal pancreatectomy. The findings revealed that the stapler technique and the combined stapler-hand-sewn technique were associated with a lower risk of clinically relevant pancreatic fistula. The study concluded that stapler closure of the pancreatic remnant leads to favorable postoperative outcomes, minimizing the occurrence of pancreatic fistula.

This retrospective and prospective study, conducted from January 2015 to January 2023, included all patients with lesions in the distal pancreas who underwent elective distal pancreatectomy at the Department of Liver, Pancreas, and Biliary Surgery, National Liver Institute, Menoufia University.

The study aimed to assess the safety of different pancreatic remnant closure techniques in preventing pancreatic fistula during distal pancreatectomy.

Acknowledgments

The discussion session was attended by Prof. Dr. Amr Mostafa, Professor and Head of the Department of Liver, Pancreas, and Biliary Surgery at the Institute, along with a distinguished group of professors and faculty members.

Wishing Dr. Mostafa continued success and excellence in his academic and professional journey!
