The Liver Institute Expands into New Frontiers in Evaluating MRI for Hepatic Iron Overload in Children with Thalassemia

Researcher Najwan Ramadan Mahmoud Shendi conducted a Master’s thesis in Interventional and Diagnostic Radiology and Medical Imaging, titled:
"Evaluation of MRI for Hepatic Iron Overload in Children with Thalassemia."

Supervisory Committee:

The study was conducted under the supervision of:

Prof. Dr. Osama Lotfy El-Abd, Professor of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology and Medical Imaging at the Institute.

Prof. Dr. Hazem Metwally Omar, Professor of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology and Medical Imaging at the Institute.

Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Ahmed El-Hawy, Professor of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, Menoufia University.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Samah Mostafa Qoura, Assistant Professor of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology and Medical Imaging at the Institute.

Thesis Discussion Committee:

The dissertation was discussed at the Institute in the presence of the committee members:

Prof. Dr. Hazem Metwally Omar.

Prof. Dr. Naglaa Lotfy Dabis, Professor of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine, Tanta University.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohamed El-Sayed Abdel Samie, Assistant Professor of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology and Medical Imaging at the Institute.

Study Objectives and Findings:

The study aimed to evaluate the role of MRI as a diagnostic tool for assessing hepatic iron overload in patients with thalassemia.

Recommendations:

The thesis recommended using T2-weighted MRI* for diagnosing hepatic iron overload and correlating it with serum ferritin levels. The study found an inverse relationship between hepatic iron levels and T2* and a direct correlation between hepatic iron levels and serum ferritin concentration.

Honored Guests and Attendees:

The discussion was attended by:

Prof. Dr. Iman Abdel Samie, Professor of Hepatology and Gastroenterology, and Vice Dean of the Institute for Postgraduate Studies and Research.

Several esteemed physicians and faculty members from the department.

Wishing the researcher continued success and progress in her academic and professional career.
