From “Difficult Cholecystectomy” to “Safe Surgery”: How Menoufia National Liver Institute Is Shaping the Future of Surgical Training

The Department of Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic, and Liver Transplant Surgery at the National Liver Institute, Menoufia University, concluded its extensive scientific and hands-on training workshop titled “From Difficult Cholecystectomy to Safe Surgery”, attended by a distinguished group of senior professors, consultants, and young physicians from various governorates across Egypt.

The workshop was held under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Ahmed Farag El-Qased, President of Menoufia University; Prof. Dr. Osama Hegazy, Dean of the National Liver Institute; Prof. Dr. Iman Abdel Samee, Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research; Prof. Dr. Hany Abdel Meguid, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development; and Prof. Dr. Hossam Soliman, Head of the Surgery Department. The event also featured the participation of the Egyptian Society of Surgeons, headed by Prof. Dr. Tarek Ibrahim, while Dr. Mahmoud Sami, Teaching Assistant in the Surgery Department, served as the workshop coordinator.

The workshop featured an intensive scientific program and advanced practical training, including live broadcasting of complex surgical procedures directly from operating rooms to lecture halls. This enabled real-time interaction between participating physicians and the surgical team, facilitating discussions on intraoperative decision-making. The scientific content focused on the principles of safe cholecystectomy, prevention of bile duct injuries (BDI), management of severe inflammation and adhesions, and the presentation of alternative and rescue surgical approaches, including bail-out procedures and subtotal cholecystectomy.

In a special statement, Dr. Osama Hegazy emphasized the institute’s strong commitment to interactive workshops and continuing medical education, saying:

“The National Liver Institute places great importance on preparing highly qualified surgical professionals capable of managing the most complex medical cases according to the latest international protocols and treatment strategies. The topic of this workshop addresses a core aspect of daily practice for gastrointestinal surgeons and aims primarily to enhance patient safety standards and prevent serious surgical complications. We are proud of the advanced scientific and technical level demonstrated by the institute today and deeply appreciate the efforts of everyone involved in making this event a success worthy of Menoufia University.”

For his part, Prof. Dr. Tarek Ibrahim, President of the Egyptian Society of Surgeons, praised the productive scientific collaboration with the institute, stating:

“The Society’s participation in this workshop stems from its mission to support and promote safe hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal surgery throughout Egypt. Focusing on safe cholecystectomy in difficult cases represents a vital step in training young surgeons to handle complex surgical scenarios and make sound intraoperative decisions based on strong scientific principles. The National Liver Institute consistently proves itself to be a leading center of excellence and a destination for physicians from university and public hospitals across the country.”

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Hossam Soliman, Head of the Surgery Department at the National Liver Institute, expressed his pride in the workshop’s success and organization, stating:

“Teamwork is the key to the success of this scientific event. Our department was committed to delivering a comprehensive educational experience that combined theoretical lectures with interactive live broadcasts of real surgical cases to maximize learning outcomes. I extend my sincere gratitude to the distinguished professors, teaching assistants, residents, fellowship trainees, interns, as well as the anesthesia, nursing, and technical teams whose tremendous efforts contributed to enhancing surgical performance and reinforcing the National Liver Institute’s leadership position in the Middle East.”

At the conclusion of the event, the institute’s administration and the Department of Surgery expressed their sincere appreciation to all participating scientific leaders in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, particularly Prof. Dr. Taha Yassin and Prof. Dr. Islam Ayyoub, along with all supporting medical teams whose contributions played a vital role in the success of this distinguished scientific gathering.
