President of Menoufia University Announces Successful Emergency Liver Transplant for a 13-Year-Old Girl at the National Liver Institute Within Less Than 48 Hours
Dr. Ahmed Farag El-Qased, President of Menoufia University, announced the successful completion of an emergency liver transplant performed by the medical team at the National Liver Institute for a 13-year-old girl from Beheira Governorate. The patient was suffering from acute liver failure caused by copper accumulation in the liver, a critical condition that required immediate intervention to save her life.
The University President stated that the patient was admitted to the National Liver Institute and immediately evaluated by a multidisciplinary medical team. The assessment confirmed the urgent need for a liver transplant. All necessary medical examinations, evaluations, and donor preparations were completed in less than 48 hours. The donor was the girl's 40-year-old father, and the transplant surgery was successfully carried out, ultimately saving the patient’s life.
Dr. El-Qased emphasized that this achievement reflects the advanced level attained by the National Liver Institute as one of the leading specialized medical centers in Egypt and the Middle East. He praised the efficiency and dedication of the medical, nursing, and support teams, who work around the clock with a strong spirit of teamwork to provide the highest standards of healthcare.
He added that this success demonstrates the Institute’s readiness to manage critical and complex cases in accordance with the latest international medical standards, reaffirming the University’s commitment to supporting the healthcare system and providing the resources necessary to further develop organ transplantation services and highly specialized medical care.

For his part, Dr. Osama Hegazy, Dean of the National Liver Institute, explained that the patient arrived at the Institute suffering from acute liver failure caused by Wilson’s disease (copper accumulation in the liver), a condition that requires urgent and rapid intervention. He noted that both the patient and donor underwent comprehensive medical evaluations through an intensive and expedited process.
Dr. Hegazy added that the success of the transplant was the result of the coordinated efforts of multiple specialized teams within the Institute, including the Liver Surgery and Transplantation Team, the Anesthesia and Intensive Care Team, the Adult Hepatology and Gastroenterology Team, the Pediatric Hepatology, Gastroenterology and Clinical Nutrition Team, the Radiology Department, Nursing Teams, Diagnostic Laboratories, the Blood Bank, the Liver Transplant Unit, and all supporting staff.
He confirmed that both the patient and the donor are currently in stable condition and are being closely monitored in accordance with established medical protocols.
