The president of the university meets the research team at Menoufia University Hospitals to develop a new blood test that can detect breast cancer methylated mutations in the DNA

Today, Dr. Adel Mubarak, President of Menoufia University, in the presence of Dr. Mahmoud Koura, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the University Hospitals Board of Directors, held a meeting with the research team at the University Hospitals Oncology Hospital, headed by Dr. Muhammad Aboul Fotouh, Professor and Head of the Department of Oncology and Nuclear Medicine, who started his first actual steps in a research project New and very important in the treatment of oncology cases under the title (a new blood test that enables the detection of methylated mutations of breast cancer in the DNA), which is funded by the STDF Competitive Research Projects at a cost of 2 million pounds.

During the meeting, the president of the university explained the value and importance of applied research projects and their impact on society, especially this research project in the treatment of breast cancer cases. Menoufia and neighboring governorates, it also includes the finest doctors from faculty and support staff who are experienced and skilled in treating such cases, in addition to providing it recently with the latest devices and modern techniques in the world in chemotherapy and radiation, the latest of which is the HD BrachyTherapy device, the fifth of its kind at the level of the Republic .

For his part, Dr. Mahmoud Koura, Dean of the College and Chairman of the University Hospitals Board of Directors, explained that the Oncology and Nuclear Medicine Hospital is of special importance within Menoufia University Hospitals, as it is the only place for treating all tumor cases within the governorate, as it witnesses the frequency of nearly 2,000 patients per month to the outpatient clinics, and Implementation of radiotherapy for approximately 380 patients per month, and chemotherapy for approximately 970 patients, in addition to other services such as atomic scanning, therapeutic feeding unit, and intensive care unit for oncology patients.

Dr. Mohamed Aboul Fotouh, head of the research team, indicated that the goal of this project is to develop a new blood test that can detect methylated mutations of breast cancer in the mobile DNA separated from the plasma using techniques to separate the tumor DNA from the plasma. We will process this DNA in a way that enables us to: Exploring the presence or absence of methylation in specific DNA regions known to be characteristic of breast cancer, we hypothesize that this method can be used in the early detection of breast cancer as well as in identifying patients with the highest reversibility, which will enable us to use cheaper and more effective treatments in these patients.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Mohamed El-Sawy, Executive Director of University Hospitals, Dr. Ahmed Al-Qurash, Director General of University Hospitals, and Dr. Reham Ahmed Abdel-Aziz, instructor at the Department of Oncology and Nuclear Medicine.
