Dr. Ahmed Farag El-Kased, President of Menoufia University and Professor of Oncology Surgery, chaired the discussion committee of a doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Medicine submitted by Dr. Jalal Mohamed Abdel-Qawy entitled "Evaluation of the feasibility of preoperative chemotherapy in cases of rectal tumors"
Dr. Ahmed El-Kased explained that colon and rectal cancer is among the leading causes of death worldwide, and represents a major problem in the field of public health, and is the third most common type of cancer in the world after lung and breast tumors and the fourth most common cause of death from tumors.
He pointed out that chemotherapy or radiation therapy before or after surgical intervention leads to improved outcomes for patients suffering from locally advanced rectal cancer, indicating that treatment before surgical intervention is preferred over intervention after it for a number of reasons, including facilitating resection due to tumor shrinkage, reducing the risk of small intestine toxicity, improving functional outcomes of the non-irradiated rectum, and increasing patient tolerance. And enhancing the biological response to treatment.
