Under the patronage of Prof. Ahmed Farag El-Kased, President of Menoufia University, and Major General Ibrahim Abu Leimon, Governor of Menoufia, and under the supervision of Prof. Sobhy Sharaf, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, Menoufia University convoys launched today the first activities of a comprehensive sustainable development initiative aimed at transforming “Meet Afeya” village, affiliated with Shebin El-Kom Center, into a sustainable village. This comes within the framework of an integrated community partnership, through a specialized medical convoy from the National Liver Institute, during which free medical examinations were provided for 175 residents of the village.

Prof. Ahmed El-Kased affirmed that Menoufia University places community service and environmental development at the top of its priorities and continuously seeks to present realistic and integrated development models that create a tangible impact on citizens’ lives. He noted that the development project of “Meet Afeya” village represents a pioneering model based on integration between economic, social, and human dimensions, reflecting the University’s support for the state’s efforts to achieve the goals of sustainable development and human development in Egypt.

The University President added that the proposed development model for “Meet Afeya” village aims to improve the quality of life of citizens across various fields adopted by Menoufia University within the initiative’s activities, which extend over an entire year. These activities primarily focus on raising health awareness and combating chronic diseases, especially fatty liver disease and viral hepatitis (B and C), through the provision of clinical diagnostic services and ultrasound examinations for chronic liver diseases, pancreas disorders, and biliary tract conditions, as well as determining appropriate treatment methods for all age groups among village residents.

Prof. El-Kased also highlighted the importance of raising awareness about fatty liver disease, the necessity of early diagnosis, and methods of treatment and prevention to avoid disease progression over time, while shedding light on the negative effects of unhealthy lifestyle changes on public health.

He further emphasized that Menoufia University convoys will continue to provide comprehensive developmental support throughout the initiative’s activities, contributing to raising awareness of the Egyptian family’s role in societal advancement, youth empowerment, support for rural women, and the promotion of entrepreneurship culture and small and micro enterprises. This will be achieved alongside providing agricultural guidance to farmers and developing livestock through agricultural and veterinary convoys, in addition to spreading social and health awareness among young women in the village preparing for marriage through a select group of specialized university professors—thereby achieving real and sustainable development for the village’s residents and building a conscious society capable of positive participation in the national development path and Egypt’s Vision 2030.

For his part, Prof. Sobhy Sharaf, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, explained that the sector will organize a series of medical, community, and agricultural convoys, in addition to awareness seminars for village residents, with the aim of transforming the village into a growing and sustainable model community. This will be accomplished through the integration of efforts among various executive and community entities and the launch of a comprehensive package of services targeting improved living standards and enhanced quality of life for citizens.

He noted that the medical convoy examined 175 residents and provided early diagnostic services, treatment, and preventive guidance in the specialties of surgery, pediatrics, internal medicine, and ultrasound. The convoy included examinations for 3 cases related to liver, pancreas, and biliary tract surgery, 97 ultrasound examinations, the diagnosis of one pediatric liver and gastrointestinal case, and the referral of 10 cases to the National Liver Institute for further examinations and diagnosis.

The convoy also provided awareness services to 65 residents, implemented by the Public Health Department at the National Liver Institute, focusing on fatty liver disease, its symptoms and causes, factors leading to fat accumulation in liver cells, and the risks associated with obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, and high blood lipid levels. The sessions also addressed prevention methods, including adopting a healthy diet, exercising regularly, reducing saturated fat intake, and controlling blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

The convoy was supervised by Prof. Osama Hegazy, Dean of the National Liver Institute; Prof. Hany Abdel-Hamid Shreim, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development; and Dr. Ahmed Attia, Executive Director of the National Liver Institute Hospital. The Convoys Department at the General Department for Community Service and Environmental Development organized the activities in cooperation with the National Liver Institute and Menoufia Governorate.
