Prof. Ahmed Farag El-Kased, President of Menoufia University, announced the successful completion of an emergency liver transplant performed by the medical team at the National Liver Institute for a 13-year-old girl from Beheira Governorate who was suffering from acute liver failure caused by copper accumulation in the liver. The patient was in a critical condition that required immediate intervention to save her life.
The University President stated that the patient was admitted to the National Liver Institute and immediately evaluated by a multidisciplinary medical team. The assessment revealed an urgent need for liver transplantation. All necessary medical examinations and procedures, including donor preparation, were completed in less than 48 hours. The donor was the girl's 40-year-old father, and the operation was successfully performed, culminating in the medical team's successful effort to save the patient's life.
Prof. El-Kased emphasized that this achievement reflects the advanced level attained by the National Liver Institute as one of the leading specialized medical institutions in Egypt and the Middle East. He commended the efficiency of the medical and nursing staff and all supporting teams, who work around the clock with a spirit of teamwork to provide the highest standards of healthcare for patients.
He further noted that this accomplishment demonstrates the institute's readiness to handle critical and complex cases in accordance with the latest international medical standards. He reaffirmed the university's commitment to supporting the healthcare system and providing the necessary resources to further develop organ transplantation services and highly specialized medical care.

For his part, Prof. Osama Hegazy, Dean of the National Liver Institute, explained that the girl was admitted to the institute suffering from acute liver failure resulting from Wilson's disease (copper accumulation in the liver), a condition that requires urgent and immediate intervention to save the patient's life. He noted that a comprehensive medical assessment of both the patient and the donor was conducted intensively and within a record timeframe.
The Dean further stated that the success of the operation was the result of the integrated efforts of the institute's various teams, including the Liver Surgery and Transplantation Team, the Anesthesia and Intensive Care Team, the Adult Hepatology and Gastroenterology Team, the Pediatric Hepatology, Gastroenterology, and Clinical Nutrition Team, the Radiology Team, nursing staff, laboratories, the Blood Bank, the Liver Transplantation Unit, and all supporting teams. He confirmed that both the patient and the donor are in stable condition and are undergoing close monitoring in accordance with approved medical protocols.
